Situation and vulnerability
People with chronic hepatitis B may acquire an additional D infection. Contact with infected blood and some sexual exposures are involved.
Signs and limits of their interpretation
Fatigue, nausea, dark urine or jaundice may accompany acute hepatitis. Symptoms do not distinguish between different hepatitises.
Diagnosis and monitoring
Serology is looking for exposure to virus D; detection of its RNA documents an active infection. Liver condition and evolution should be evaluated.

Prevention and care
B vaccination helps prevent D infection in a person not infected with B. Avoid sharing injection equipment; monitoring of B/D infection is the responsibility of a specialist.
Practical issues
Does the B vaccine treat hepatitis D already present?
No: its role is preventive. An infection already installed requires a specialized evaluation and appropriate treatment options, without confusing vaccination with treatment.
