Blood and fluids: understanding an exposure

The fact sheets in this section refer to exposures where blood or certain fluids may occur. The fluid, the inlet route and the skin integrity should be specified. HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C do not have the same opportunities for prevention.

The distinctions that change reading

Document

Record the time, equipment, area affected and type of exposure.

Appeals

After a possible exposure, request a quick assessment according to the local circuit; some preventive treatments are sensitive to the delay.

Monitoring

The schedule of examinations depends on the agent and the situation; an early result may require control.

Practical issues

Does one test exclude all blood-borne infections?

No. Each test is aimed at a particular agent and detection window.

Before interpreting a sheet

Find the agent's name, the indicated routes and the primary source. Then check the date and territory of this source. A section helps to compare; it does not determine a person's medical conduct.
