Families of biological agents

Browse the directory by nature of the agent. This entry complements the routes of exposure: belonging to the same family does not mean having the same transmission, the same severity or the same preventive measures.

Choose a section

The numbers below describe our documentary catalogue. They do not measure the frequency of disease, its severity or a health alert.

Virus

The viral family brings together very different infections. Influenza and measles are associated with the respiratory tract; hepatitis B and HIV are associated with certain exposures to blood or sex; dengue is associated with a vector. The word "virus" therefore does not allow for a single protective measure.

Bacteria

The bacterial category includes respiratory, digestive, vector-borne or wound-related infections. Tuberculosis, listeriosis and tetanus illustrate three different mechanisms. The relevant measures must relate the agent to its context, rather than treating all bacteria as an identical hazard.

Parasite

The directory brings together parasitic diseases associated with vectors, water, food, the environment or contact. Malaria, giardiasis and scabies do not follow the same path. Identifying exposure and agent is more useful than seeking universal protection against pests.

Mushrooms

Fungal infections in the repertoire cover superficial and invasive diseases. Some are associated with an environment, others are associated with a flora already present or with a transmission in care. A mould visible in a dwelling does not diagnose a fungus in a person.

Prion

The category of prions concerns agents of a nature different from viruses, bacteria and parasites. The directory distinguishes diseases and their rare contexts, including sporadic situations. A biological classification is not an estimate of the individual risk or a traffic alert.

Multiple agents

"Multiple agents" is a documentary category, not a taxonomic family. It collects records where the name refers to a syndrome or a situation that may have several causes. The description of the clinical table of identification of a specific agent should be separated.
