Candidiasis

Candidiasis occurs when Candida, a yeast naturally present in the body, proliferates. Local infection and invasive candidiasis are different situations.

Documentary Enrichment: · General information

Essentials

Mycosis linked to yeasts usually present on the body; some invasive forms affect mainly fragile people.

Agent
Candida spp.
Transmission or exposure
Flora of the organism

Situation and vulnerability

Recent antibiotics, poorly controlled diabetes or immunosuppression may favour certain forms. Hospitalisation and invasive devices are more relevant to infections of the blood or organs.

Signs and limits of their interpretation

Vaginal itching, oral plaques or swallowing pain vary depending on the site. Invasive infections can cause fever and chills in already ill people.

Diagnosis and monitoring

Examination and, depending on the site, sampling may specify the diagnosis. The presence of Candida does not always mean infection: symptoms and context are decisive.

Prevention and care

Antifungal treatment depends on site and severity. Persistent or recurrent symptoms merit evaluation; local candidiasis does not lead to a finding of widespread infection.

Practical issues

Does the common candidiasis behave like Candida auris?

No: Candida auris has special features, including spread in health care facilities. Information on this species should not be automatically applied to a typical local candidiasis.
