Fact sheetVirus

Enterovirus D68 infection

The enterovirus D68 mainly causes respiratory infections. It can also be associated with an acute, rare but severe flaccid myelitis.

Documentary Enrichment: · General information

Essentials

Respiratory infection may be more severe in some children, especially in the presence of asthma.

Agent
Enterovirus D68
Transmission or exposure
Respiratory tract · Close contact

Situation and vulnerability

Infants, children and adolescents are often affected. Asthma can increase the risk of severe respiratory symptoms.

Signs and limits of their interpretation

Cold, cough and sourness may evolve into wheezing or pneumonia. Muscle weakness may occur after the respiratory episode.

Diagnosis and monitoring

A general enterovirus/rhinovirus test does not always identify D68. The typing requires specialized examinations according to the available laboratories.

Prevention and care

Apply respiratory measures and prescribed asthma monitoring plan. A sudden weakness of a limb, difficulty swallowing or breathing requires immediate medical assistance.

Practical issues

Does a "positive enterovirus" result confirm D68?

No: there are many enteroviruses. The D68 type research is distinct from general detection and should be interpreted with the clinical picture.
