Melioidosis

Melioidosis is an infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, acquired from contaminated soil or water. It can affect the lungs or several organs.

Documentary Enrichment: · General information

Essentials

Bacterial infection acquired from contaminated soil or water, mainly in certain tropical areas.

Agent
Burkholderia pseudomallei
Transmission or exposure
Environment · Respiratory tract

Situation and vulnerability

Diabetes, kidney or liver disease and immunosuppression increase the risk. Agricultural exposures and after heavy rains should be reported.

Signs and limits of their interpretation

Fever, cough, chest pain or local injury are possible. Infection can spread and cause sepsis.

Diagnosis and monitoring

Diagnosis can be difficult because the disease looks like other infections. Mention travel, contact with water or soil, and chronic diseases.

Prevention and care

Avoid wound contact with standing water or soil in the affected areas and use suitable protections. Antibiotic treatment can be prolonged and requires complete follow-up.

Practical issues

Should we just mention recent trips?

No: CDCs sometimes describe a very long delay between exposure and symptoms. Former stays can therefore be useful for the evaluation.
