General information, not a diagnosis Method and limitations

Fact sheetVirus

Rabies

Rabies are transmitted mainly when the saliva of an infected mammal reaches a wound or mucous membrane.

Documentary Enrichment: · General information

Essentials

Zoonosis of the nervous system transmitted by saliva of an infected mammal, most often after bite or scratch.

Agent
Lyssavirus
Transmission or exposure
Animal/zoonosis · Close contact

Situation and vulnerability

A bite, scratch or direct contact with a bat requires a risk assessment, even if the injury appears small.

Signs and limits of their interpretation

Prevention after exposure is decided before symptoms. The delay of onset is variable: a healed wound or absence of pain does not make it possible to conclude that the risk has passed. Clinical disease affects the nervous system and is almost always fatal.

Diagnosis and monitoring

The assessment covers contact, animal, territory and documented vaccinations. There is no routine screening test to wait calmly after exposure. The competent centre decides on the vaccine and immunoglobulins when they are needed.

Prevention and care

Wash the wound immediately with water and soap for at least 15 minutes and consult immediately to assess post-exposure prophylaxis.

Practical issues

Does pre-travel vaccination exempt you from consulting?

No. It does not remove the need for care after exposure. Do not wait for symptoms.

Does pre-travel vaccination provide treatment after bite?

No. An exposure still requires an assessment and, as appropriate, appropriate prophylaxis. Report doses and dates already received.

Preparing for an exchange with a professional

  • Date, country and place of contact
  • Species, behaviour and availability of animal for authorities
  • Location of wound, saliva contact and previous rabies vaccine

Bring the full minutes and dates. This information facilitates evaluation; its collection must not delay an urgent appeal.

Individual decisionThe choice of a test, treatment or prevention depends on the local situation and recommendations. In case of distress, call 911.

In practiceObserve and understand

Exposure is not limited to a visible bite

WHO distinguishes contact with intact skin, scratches without bleeding, and deeper or mucosal exposures. Describing the exact contact helps the rabies centre; no bleeding does not rule out exposure.

Keep in mind

After potentially exposing contact, immediately wash with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical assessment without delay. Prior vaccination does not remove the need for this advice.
