Situation and vulnerability
Infection is often acquired during childhood in the transmission zone. The absence of swelling does not exclude infection or internal damage.
Signs and limits of their interpretation
Chronic forms can cause swelling of the limbs, thickening of the skin or hydrocele. Acute inflammatory episodes, sometimes linked to secondary bacterial infections, may be added.
Diagnosis and monitoring
Swelling alone does not confirm the parasitic cause. The history of residence, examination and evaluation of infection and its consequences guide care.

Prevention and care
Prevention includes mosquito protection and local treatment programs. Lymphedema requires continuous skin care and appropriate measures; hydrocele may be the subject of surgery.
Practical issues
Is the treatment of infection sufficient to remove lymphedema?
The control of the parasite and the care of chronic lesions are complementary. WHO insists on sustainable access to lymphedema care; old swelling may require continuous management.
