Mother and child transmission: pregnancy, birth and after

This path distinguishes the transmission of a mother-to-child infection from the way the mother acquired it. It may occur during pregnancy, at birth or after depending on the agent. A maternal exposure does not prove an infection of the foetus.

The distinctions that change reading

Moment

The transmission possibilities differ depending on the agent and the term of pregnancy.

Screening

Previous results and specific markers are required to interpret an examination.

Prevention

Pre-pregnancy vaccination, prenatal follow-up, food prevention and medical care respond to different situations.

Practical issues

Are all these infections going through breastfeeding?

No. Periods and mechanisms differ. A sheet classified here does not mean a transmission by all the maternal-infant mechanisms.

Before interpreting a sheet

Find the agent's name, the indicated routes and the primary source. Then check the date and territory of this source. A section helps to compare; it does not determine a person's medical conduct.
